Boys and Girls Club

One recent issue is to terminate the Boys and
Girls Club contract. This decision appears to have come with
minimal cost analysis, and their reasoning seems to rest on a
belief that the contract isn’t financially viable compared to similar
organizations in neighboring communities. Unfortunately, it seems
they hadn’t fully researched these costs, nor had they attempted
any negotiations with the organization before signing the original
agreement. This situation underscores a larger issue in both
government and corporate settings: the challenge of effectively
negotiating, mediating, and collaborating on contracts with
partners.

To add to this concern, the council’s public meetings on the topic
seemed aimed only at informing the Boys and Girls Club, not the
broader community. They didn’t engage the public at large in
discussions about such a significant decision, suggesting a lack of
transparency and public involvement. Moreover, the council’s
intent to turn the facility into a museum without community
consultation raises additional questions about priorities and
inclusiveness.

The council’s first oversight was allowing the contract to expire
without a proper cost analysis, from the start. This would have
allowed the Boys and Girls Club to reassess the terms and
negotiate a mutually beneficial agreement. Instead, they
unilaterally decided not to renew and held a council meeting
where the decision had effectively already been made, leaving the
community out of the process.

In brief, I am concerned and this is just one of the many reasons
that I am running for Mayor.

Blessings to you always,
Myrta Rivera
